A Picture Says a Thousand Words

A large part in understanding our republic's history will come from our analysis of imagery. Take a moment to look over the image attached to the lesson that depicts our society in the late 20th century and respond to this question:

Do Now: Based on this painting, what are the inferences that we can make about American society and culture? What appear to be the values of the society being depicted in the image? Use what we see in the image to support your points.

As we did on Monday, we are required to comment once and then we reply to two others.

  1. Through this image, we can infer that the creator of this piece sees America as a very materialistic and product-hungry society. The buildings in the picture are plastered with huge, brightly colored advertisements, and there are fast food restaurants on the corners. The streets are filled with taxis and buses. All of the aforementioned are products and services and things for people to acquire and use. The picture demonstrates the American peoples need for products and items, and how it can take over our lives. It portrays America as a society that is very materialistic and highly capitalist, which is not entirely wrong.

    1. I strongly agree when you say the creator of this piece sees America as a product-hungry society. As shown in the image there are huge advertisements of products all over the place and if those advertisements weren't working then they wouldn't be there (it would be seen as a waste of money). So obviously those products are bought the advertisements may help encourage that purchase and overall according to the image I believe the creator thinks of America as very product-hungry.

    2. I agree with you on how America tries to sell the public on everything in the painting, and perhaps the artist knew that and tried to paint that into existence.

    3. I agree that it makes America look like a very materialistic society. One fueled by ads, capitalism, and money. The artists draws he eye of the observer to the billboards by painting them with bright colors and putting them everywhere.

    4. I agree with the sentiment that America is mostly focused on how to sell consumer goods and products. The billboards are meant to be eye-catching so that you would buy said products.

  3. Based on the imagine, American society is very focused on objects and products that can make their life easier. Americans are drawn to buying these products through big, flashy signs, as illustrated in the picture. Americans want to live extravagantly and to live life large, which is why their advertisements are large and bright. The advertisements are selling a lifestyle that Americans want to live, through products or television. Everything wants to get your attention, they take advantage of your mind by putting things in your face and make you want to buy them. This is how American society works; Americans want to buy things that make them seem cooler and richer than they actually are, and companies fight to be the one to supply them through ads. Perhaps some are as a cool as they look, flying through America on helicopters and parachutes. But most Americans are just materialistic and want products to make them into who they want to be.

    1. I agree that companies want your attention because getting your attention will get you to buy their products. The image does indeed show this as the ads are all over the place in giant bright colors. These bright colors will attract peoples eyes towards them and want them to look at the product. If the product is something they are interested in then they most likely will buy it.

    2. I agree and also want to add that the products that are being sold are part of trends and don't actually have a any real value, just people who sold a product that someone of importance wore or used and are now on a rush to sell as much as possible

  4. Based on this painting we can an inference I can make is that America is just a place where everything is very congested, there may be too many things going on and people are very reliant on manufactured products. I say this because looking at the roads they are flooded with cars, every lain has multiple cars in it and it is obviously implying something from the creator of this painting. I assume what's being implied is America is very congested. There are also advertisements of many products all over the place on giant screens possibly showing how most people rely on those things to get through their day and without them America wouldn't be what it is today. All in all the values of the society seem to be manufactured goods and traveling (whether it's work or just going to enjoy themselves).

    1. I agree with you on the basis that Americans rely on the products that are advertised heavily today. In the painting, it seemed as though the streets were covered with taxis and convertibles. Maybe the artist was using it as an example of a manufactured product that most people, (outside of cities), needed in order to survive.

    2. I agree with you that the artist makes it look like a place that is very busy. Lots of things are going on simultaneously. Its a bit chaotic, but a good chaotic. It shows the mass amounts of opportunity and fun, along with the crazy busyness of it all.

    3. I agree because manufactured products are promenant and while small businesses can become successful, advertisement isn't a real idea for them

    4. I agree with you. Your thinking on how the meaning of the paining is very good and I like how you describe every detail in which you think the depiction is of the noise and mass productions In the United States. Great argument and nice explaining with all the details

    5. I agree with you. The US market and our society is flooded with products like cars and many other things. There are huge advertisments to satisfy our demands and how our society needs manufactured goods.

    6. I agree with you about the congested part. This picture implies America is overcrowded and full of fake news and clickbait

  5. Based on this painting we can make many inferences. The first is that it is fueled by capitalism and advertisement. There are so many different billboards and bright flashing signs. Each ad more extravagant then the next. This shows how America is a society based around the consumer and attracting peoples attention. Furthermore, it looks like a place that is exciting and adventurous. There are many bright colors that give off good vibes. IN addition there are people swinging from helicopters, parachuting, and what looks like riding a roller coster. This square is full of things to do. Everything more thrilling and intriguing then the next. Overall this a painting displays two things. Number one is that America is a society based on money and the second is that it is very exciting.

    1. I agree to how America is basically fueled by advertisements and wealth. It can also seem exciting and overwhelming with how much is going on in one moment, then the next.

    2. I agree in that America is making its money through advertising. Although all of the lights and signs around can be chaotic, it still looks like a fun place to live where you would never get bored.

    3. I agree with this because there is a lot of advertisements and majority of the photos in the billboards are of advertisements so it makes it look like advertisement is how these people live.

  6. From what I see in the painting, with all the various ads and bright lights, I can say that the values of American culture would be to advertise. Products such as Coco Cola and Samsung are shown, alongside a new billboard being put up. These advertisements want to draw you in, wanting you to buy and spend money, then consume some more. The bustling road captures how fast-paced American culture is, having to do this and that. Cars easily swerving around the truck putting up a billboard, people crossing the road as there's traffic, the helicopters in the air. It all captures that aspect of having to do things quickly. It's bright, fast quick like a burst, moving on from one thing to the next. America is fast-paced, wanting to get your attention with it's bright colors and fast pace. It could be jarring, exciting, shocking, or tiring. I feel as if this painting captures how America focuses on products, and how it moves from one thing to the next at light-speed.

    1. I agree with you about how fast everything goes in America. It can be so busy that it's hard to stay on top of it all. There are new things happening every day, and new advertisements for marketing that companies have to keep up with.

    2. I agree with your logic. Samsung and Coco Cola are two very major companies. They use their ads to attract tourists and other types of people into buying their products. The amount of cars shown on the roads show that America is very busy, even during the night.

  7. Based on this image, we know that the United States of America is very crowded and overwhelming. We are fueled by money and advertisement as well as capitalism goals and clickbait.

  8. Through this image, we can see that American society and culture is materialistic. The economy thrives on capitalism and advertising. The image shows how busy America is, and it is full of ads for all sorts of things. Even at night, it is still bustling. It is full of people and traffic, making it feel crowded and noisy. Although it is nice to have all these lights and people around, it can be chaotic. There is so much around you that it is hard to keep up with. There are large buildings, huge company advertisements, cars and buses all around, people everywhere, a helicopter, and even a parachute. You could list a million things in this image and still forget something.

    3. I really agree with your inferences about the painting, and I too think he/or she was trying to send a message about what a materialistic and money-oriented world we live in.

  9. The inferences about American norms and society I can see in the painting are how it shows how chaotic living in NYC can be. To back this up the painting shows many examples of chaotic life such as people swinging from extremely tall buildings and hanging build-boards. In fact this section of the painting isn't entirely inaccurate, there are many workers who wash and clean skyscrapers as well as hang build-boards. This might seem a little crazy to people who aren't used to it. As well as this, an inference I can make from the painting is that the author is very aware and probably not used to the fact that NY tends to have a lot of police cars in use, and has depicted this as well. So overall from what the artist has depicted I can infer he sees America as extremely chaotic

  10. An inference that I can get from this painting about American norms in society is that in America the advertisements are very abundant and that this country relies on its resources on advertising its products and entertainment. The value of the society and the paining looks like it is mainly focusing on resources and entertainment. There are many advertisements like for Samsung, Coca-Cola, JVC, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Kelloggs, Panasonic, and many others. These things are reliable resources in entertainment like food, drinks, technology, and television. So the overall depiction in this painting is that the country is very reliant on advertising the resources and entertainment

    1. I agree with you. Advertisements plastered on walls have become a norm in our society. Manufactured goods and entertainment have become mainstays in our society and we have become very reliant on them.

    2. I also agree like here we judge people off what they here and watch. It’s like we only cared about those things because I mean we don’t even have a standard religion like other countries.

    3. I agree with Luis' comment saying that our country is very reliant on advertising because it is the one of the driving forces as what has made this country capitalist

  11. Based on this painting, we can infer that America is a vivacious country that relies heavily on their technological advances to advertise products and generate revenue. At first sight, I quickly noticed that this was a portrait of New York City at night. The painting depicts a lively and vibrant environment where advertisement is the focal point. The streets are covered in cars with fast-food restaurants nearby. This makes it easy to conclude that NYC is always an active and lively place where you can probably find anything you want . As I continue to study the image, I see all the ads and billboards for products like Coca-Cola and Samsung. This helps me assume that America is fueled by the profits obtained by these forms of propaganda. From this one painting, we can infer that America is a vibrant society that uses their technology to appeal to the consumer and generate income.

  13. This image portrays the US as a very materialistic and capitalist society. The sheer amount of advertising alone in this painting is enough to assume that, because the artist is showing that being bombarded with advertisements is normal for Americans, which it is.

    1. That’s very true, I think that even in public places like the train remember how many ads for apps and like discount codes. And yeah I think after seeing it all your life it’s normal in a way.

    2. I agree with Max because he says that it feels like the bombardment of these advertisements is normal to Americans, which is definitely true. It feels like there's been a snowball effect over the years which has been the cause of our capitalist and materialistic society

  14. The image shows a very materialistic society, and that’s very true. Oh can get there hat I dare I because the main thing in the drawing are the amount of advertising there is. It’s the Amin thing you see when you look. I wouldn’t be surprise if any person that come here they would ting we don’t have any values, that we only cared about how things look.

  17. I can tell from the picture that America is a very advanced country that heavily relies on urban technology to function. The bright lights, ads, and other attractions show that America is a constantly busy country that relies on consumerism to work effectively. I can infer that due to the sky color, that its nighttime, and there are still buildings with lit windows. This shows that America is constantly busy, even during the night.

  18. I think that this painting also shows some community, because all of these people are in the same place, all driving through the same area, all seeing the same signs. All of these people are so different, but they are brought together by being in the same place. There may be a lot of materialism, but everyone is materialist together.

    1. I agree with your idea that the society is materialistic and possibly even shallow, perhaps judging too much based on appearances. Despite the society being very fast-paced and distracted, what brings them together is the consumerism.

  20. We can infer from this picture of our society that it is a very materialistic and consumerist society that places a big influence on wealth. The picture shows alot of things are rooted in money, such as the mass media entertainment(movies and shows) as well as flashing lights, big billboards and advertisements enticing you to buy different things. The city also seems to be very rushed and fast-paced, as many there are many cars and changing lights.
