Our Constitution's Goals

 Respond to the following question/prompt in the comment section below.

Why may the Preamble (introduction) of the Constitution be important to understanding the direction our nation will take?

As is our practice we will reply to two of your classmates.


"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

The preamble to the U.S. constitution states the goal of the government and the document (to form a more perfect union) and specifies the ways in which it will do so (establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and ensure the blessing of liberty to everyone). By understanding these goals and steps, we can see the direction that the Founding Fathers were guiding the nation towards: freedom and social justice for everyone, the people as the one true authority, and the government as a tool for people to prosper under.

  2. The preamble of the U.S. constitution is the thesis for the rest of the article. This means that it establishes the direction that the writers want the document to go in. They start off with We, which is very important. It shows how they are trying to make the document inclusive and creative a bond between all Americans. Furthermore, it goes on to say how they want to better their existing govermnet rather than start a new one. This ensures that people know they are not completly obliterating all that they have worked for. In addition, the go on to express that their goals are those of "tranquillity...defense....welfare..and liberty." This outline sets a precedent for the rest of the article and shows how the constitution will do wonders for the American people.

  3. The preamble of the U.S. constitution gives insight into the content of the rest of the document. Without the preamble, we would not be able to grasp the most important steps taken in the constitution that will be explained further in the document. It also explains why this constitution has been written and why we, the people, should take into consideration what the constitution has to say and hopefully agree with their plans. For instance, the use of "we the people" helps them prove their goal for unity within the land and get us to have more trust in them. The preamble is like the government's way of introducing us to their plans for unity, peace, and freedom on a level that is meant to seem welcoming and trustworthy.

  4. I believe the Preamble does a lot to give direction to the Constitution as a whole. It in a sense lays the groundworks of the main ideas and principles that are laid out in it. The use of the phrase "We The People" feels very significant because it gives off the idea that this new America will be inclusive for all and that the Constitution accounts for all people. It talks about the importance of a federal government and their dedication to not end up as a tyrannical government. It also emphasizes that they do not plan on starting this new government from scratch but to instead alter the British laws and cater to their own belief system.

  5. When I think of the preamble to the constitution I think of the blurb in the back of books, setting up the ideas and messages of the book. The preamble shows that justice is on the forefront of the founders minds and ensuring the best and most fair government is, at least what they claim is, their main focus.

  6. The introduction of the Constitution clearly demonstrates what the goal of the government is. To put it simply, the Constitution could be identified as a tutorial, and the introduction is what you are trying to achieve. The rest of the Constitution could be the steps and the process of finishing and completing the goal. The intro directly states that the goals of the Constitution will stay solid in stone.

    1. I think the tutorial is a good way to look at the Constitution. The Preamble explains the purpose of the document and the values that America wants to have, and the Constitution gives specific ways that America plans to accomplish this.

  7. The introduction to the constitution shows the beliefs and principles as well as the foundations of the government. In the introduction, the founding fathers declared their goals and hopes for the new government, and in the rest of the constitution, they explained how it was going to function and how it was going to work and be executed. It emphasizes that they are simply improving their government, and that it will not become like the tyrannical British rule they were under before. Overall, the purpose of the preamble is to introduce what they want to change and do to their current existing system.

  10. The preamble of the constitution shows what the rest of the document will speak about and the main goals to build our future nation summarized. Saying things such as, "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense" this is showing the future goals for our nation. With understanding of the preamble the people should know what the future of this nation will look like.

  13. The preamble to the constitution lays out the goals for the constitution and puts the rest of the constitution into context for the reader. It introduces the main reasoning for the constitution as well as its main ideas. It also explains how the British have failed them and how this form of government will improve on the one set up by the british.

  14. The preamble of the U.S. constitution speaks on the content of the document. The constitution is only well known with that preamble because of all the things it establishes about it. It helps explain the backstory that is behind the constitution and the meaning of making it to be more informational for the colonists to understand. The preamble helped meant things to be explained like with the constitution and the unity, as well as the meaning of it.

Also, by saying "to form a more perfect Union," it implies that America is not perfect, but that we are trying our best to improve it. The government does not want to get rid of the structure it has already, but they want to add to the ideas they have.

  18. The preamble of the constitution gives America the seeds to grow a nation based on their founding principals. The American people got a foundation for building their government specifically by the phrase, "ensure domestic tranquility." While it is broad, it gave lawmakers and government officials are basis on how to support the American people. When voting on and passing laws, congress and the house of
    representatives will consider if it boosts the tranquility of America and its people, therefor stopping any laws or acts that will promote chaos in America, which is a pretty good foundation for a government, objectively speaking.
