Qualifications

Take a look at our Constitution, specifically Article One, Section Eight, which describe the powers granted to Congress, our national legislative branch.

Based upon these 18 powers/responsibilities please share what qualifications or experience do you believe members of our legislative branch should have in order to carry out these powers well.

As is our practice, comment below and then reply to the comments of two others.

  1. Based upon the 18 powers/responsibilities that Congress is given from Article one Section eight of the constitution a few qualifications should be imposed in order or them to cary out such actions. One qualification is that they are democratically elected. Another, is that they are a U.S. citizen. Finally, a third qualification members of the legislation should have is they should be over the age of 21.

    1. The qualifications listed are very important, and the responsibility of maintaining them is a lot to handle. It is important for all the branches of the government to understand that they need to carry them out correctly and fairly.

    2. These qualifications are important though I would suggest a slightly higher age limit.

    3. The members should be elected because that is the best way to ensure that they represent the community.

    4. I agree that the qualifications you stated are important for the government.

    5. I agree with all of the qualifications listed, though the age limit I feel should also be raised.

    6. Although an age limit is good, I think it should be raised to 25.

    7. i agree with most of them but the 18 age should be more but again not too high.

    8. I agree, and think that being elected and being a US Citizen are by far the most important qualifications.

    9. I agree, these rules and restrictions help carry out the responsibilities and powers of the Constitution.

  2. In order to carry out the 18 responsibilities and powers of the Constitution, the members of the legislative branch should determine whether or not there are exceptions for those powers. The three branches all work together so that the powers could be freely and fairly be known. With this in mind, the powers also could be flawed. Ensuring that there could or couldn't be exceptions and making sure that the powers are fair is key to carrying them out correctly.

    1. Such restrictions and qualifications as those listed above are crucial to sustaining a functioning government.

      Delete
    2. Yeah these restrictions are crucial for a well functioning government to work well and be productive.

      Delete
    3. I agree that those qualifications are necessary and will help the government function properly.

      Delete
  3. In order to carry out these responsibilities I think that these legislative branch members should have to be elected, above a specific age, served some sort of legal And/or political office and a US citizen.

    1. The base qualifications are important to mention for they are commonly looked over when asked for specifics.

    2. Making the people decide who should be elected for such an important role is essential for fairness in the government.

      Delete
    3. I think it's interesting that you think members should have held previous office because then you would get a lot of similar people. For example, you wouldn't have anyone like George Washington because he was only a military leader at first.

    4. I agree that these qualifications are important for people in the government.

    5. The basic requirements for a person to be a part of the legislative branch are these, and they are important and should be considered firstly.

      Delete
    6. I think the most important part is that they have to be elected. I think age and experience don't matter that much, because experience and age alone make you remotely qualified for such a big job.

      Delete
    7. Being part of a political office is also pretty significant, not saying the others aren't

  4. Based upon these 18 powers, I think that members of our legislative branch should have to be elected in their district, a U.S. citizen for more than 10 years, pass a background check, and be at least 25 years old.

    1. There definitely should be a background check so that no one unqualified or corrupt gets such a big responsibility.

    2. I think these are pretty fair. I agree with them all.

      Delete
    3. I agree because this helps avoid criminals being elected.

      Delete
    4. i do agree with the part of the background check since they have to be trustworthy enough.

    5. Adding on to Nathalia, one of the focuses of the US government (at least before) was staying free of corruption

  5. I think members of our legislative branch should have to be at least of a certain age, be a U.S. citizen, be elected, and preferably have some experience.

  6. The requirements for the members of the legislative branch should be that they should be elected, be above a certain age, be a US citizen, and have some political/legal background.

    1. I agree that without any political/legal experience, they would have no idea how to do their job in the legislative branch.

  7. Based upon these 18 powers/responsibilities, I think members of our legislative branch should have certain qualifications. One qualification is they should be above the age of 25. Secondly, they should be a U.S. citizen for at least 5 years. Finally, a qualification should be that they are elected for the role because they have experience in legal and political services.

    1. This feels like a pretty good way to ensure anyone who is appointed is completely qualified.

      Delete
    2. All of these qualifications are good, including the last qualification in particular.

      Delete
    3. All of these seem pretty decent, but the five year citizenship is probably too little.

      Delete
    4. I agree, having expirience can't really be regulated, but if it were possible it would be a great rule

  8. Based on these 18 powers, I think it's important that only those who are very qualified should be entrusted with such big responsibility. One qualification I feel should be necessary is at least a small amount of experience in the legal field because its important to have someone who is well-knowledged. I think it is also important to have someone who is voted on by citizens. If citizens can't trust their own government it is really difficult to continue to move forward in my opinion.

    1. I think this is true and something the US has lost in recent years with trust in govenment very low

      Delete
    2. I agree. It's very important that people are able to trust their government and their representatives, because in a government run by the people, a loss of trust can cause great divisions and conflict between people.

      Delete
    3. I agree that they should have prior experience to show that they deserve the job.

      Delete
    4. I think that having that requirement would give the people less choice, also because while they may not have a background in politics being a politician, many people know a lot about politics and they should be able to run as well

  9. One qualification that is important for our legislative members to have is to be good negotiators, as they regulate commerce with foreign powers. It is also necessary to have some experience in law, as they are making laws. It is also important to have a level head in general in order to ensure the safety of the nation.

    1. I agree that they should be level headed, and maybe this could be checked with a mental evaluation beforehand.

  10. Based on the 18 powers, those who represent us in congress should be very qualified, because of the amount of power they hold. The first qualification I think they should have is that they are at least 25, because any younger than that and it seems like they don't have enough knowledge or experience. The second qualification is that they have to have at least a decent amount of knowledge in the court of law, because this will give them some insight on what laws to pass. Thirdly, they should have at least 100 hours in community service, because it gives them insight on the people as well as not becoming large-headed.

    1. Having knowledge on law and politics is important, because it ensures that people can only get elected if they are able to make informed decisions.

  11. Based on the 18 powers I think that people who want to become a representative should be a US citizen above a ceritan age and thats it. Think a main idea of the us government is that anyone can be elected for the most part, they just have to be chosen by the people

    1. I think one requirement you mentioned without realising it was being elected. I think this should be required.

    2. I agree that age is an important qualification but there may be more than just that.

  12. Based on the 18 powers granted to Congress by Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, certain restrictions need to be put on the legislative branch and who can serve as a part of that branch. They should have to be elected, to ensure that the people have some say in political change, and they should have to be of a certain age in order to make sure that they have at least some experience. The three branches also need to be able to work with each other and create a series of checks and balances to ensure that no one branch can gain too much power.

    2. I agree putting restrictions helps carry out the responsibilities and powers of the Constitution.

  13. Based on these 18 powers, i think that one qualification is that these congresspeople are honestly elected by the general population.

  14. when you look at the the 18 powers you notice that the members of congress would need to be of certain age, citizen of the country, should get some sort of previous experience in the field and should have been elected.

    1. I also think some previous background in the field is necessary.

  15. The qualifications I believe members of our legislative branch should have in order to carry out these 18 powers include them being over 21, a US citizen, college graduate, with 4 years hands on experience in law and a thorough background check. This is necessary because article sec. 8 grants such large powers and ability's towards members that could really make or break a country. Furthermore, there may even be the need to allow voting from the American people due to the fact that some may feel upset by giving away these rights without any representation.

  16. Based on these 18 powers that are granted to congress, I think that each congressperson should be elected by the people they are representing. If they are not elected by their people, they should not be able to represent and make decisions for their people. Along with that, each representative should be a citizen of the United States, so we can be sure that they have the interests of the US at heart, because by changing the country they are also changing their own lives, whereas someone from a foreign country wouldn't be affected by rules they created within our government.

  17. Other than what people are putting here, they obviously need to have some sort of experience with handling money/law because they need to know what they're doing. They should also be able to pay off taxes and such on time, setting an example for the people

  18. To carry out the 18 responsibilities and powers of the Constitution, the members of the legislative branch should determine whether or not there are exceptions for those powers. The three branches all work together so it will be a fair equality to the power of each of them as a result of the horrible overpowering of Great Britain. One branch can do something but another can disagree to what they do with that thing as well as one branch can pick a member of another, ensuring everything is happy and fair for everyone in America. There is no problem with checks and balances and with it, it carries out the responsibilities and powers of the Constitution.

  19. Based on the 18 powers qualifications that legislative branch should have is be a US citizen. They should be above a certain age. There should also be an amount of previous work to show that they have enough experience to have that position.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The qualifications should be a US citizen over 18, so that no one is really left behind if they want to be in power. This allows for the people to truly decide who they want.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Based on the 18 powers qualifications, i believe that the congressman should be elected. They should also be above a specific age. They should also have experience to obtain then position
